Nursing Board Exam Tips 06: On Pencil…

October 23rd, 2009 by Dianne Peña

Pencil is one of the most important thing you need to consider in passing the Nursing Board Exam with that, I give you these tips:

Number 2 pencil doesn’t necessarily mean its MONGOL. I mean, Mongol is pretty much overrated already. Choose any #2 pencil that you are comfortable with. I personally used #2 green Faber Castel pencil during the actual board exam and #2 black Stabilo during our Nursing Audit.

Never use a new pencil during the actual board. Use a pencil in which you are used to using already. Any brand of pencil will do as long as it is #2. New pencil can affect your shading. Jut sharpen the pencil you have practiced your shading skills with during the board exam. Shading/Technicalities are some of the controversial issues in the board exam.

Use an eraser with the same brand as your pencil. If you are using Faber Castel, use a Faber Castel eraser, Stabilo pencil and Stabilo eraser, Mongol pencil and WHAT??? Well, that is the problem with Mongol. They have no separate eraser, yeah it has an eraser at the tip but it leaves an orange/rd mark to your answer sheet. Plus, it doesn’t erase the pencil mark completely. Don’t be thrifty with the things you use for the Nursing Licensure Exam because its much better to spend than to repeat.

Beware of fake pencils. Make sure you buy your things in a bookstore not just in any vendors. I am pretty much sure that Mongol pencils have imitations an I’ve bought 1. When I used it without even doing any erasures, 7 points have deducted in my score during the review. It’s quite big right? So don’t risk it.

Take care of your answer sheet. Don’t leave any marks on the answer sheet and as much as possible, don’t make any erasures. Answer 1st in your questionnaires. It is not prohibited. When you shade, make sure you are in the right number. Many have troubles when transferring their answers when they have overlooked one number.

Bonus tip: They say bring extra pencil, I say, Bring an extra but use only 1 pencil throughout the whole board exam, just sharpen every time so that your way of shading would still be the same.

Disclaimer: I am not against Mongol. I just had the luxury to experiment with the pencil that I am going to use for the Nursing Licensure Exam because we had multiple exams in our review center provided with pseudo-Nursing Licensure Exam answer sheets that is why I know the difference.

I say make sure to buy your Mongol pencil from National Bookstore. Ha. I agree with the ‘use only one pencil’ rule. I have grown a certain fondness over the pencil I used during audit and the actual nursing exam. It is now the size of my pinky. But am now a fan of Stabilo’s pencil and eraser set for my IELTS. Lol.

  5. Dianne Peña Says:

@clarisse- haha true for the size of my Stabilo pencil. 🙂 I just dont want to plug national bookstore but since you’ve said it. yeah, people should buy there. haha! 🙂 goodluck on your IELTS..:))

Marami na pong cases ng Mongol na fake. It’s about time we try new things. Faber-Castell Exam Pencil is the best for me, me sarili siyang eraser and sharpener. 2B ang lead niya and ginawa daw siya for computer use only. Better be sure than sorry.

  7. ann Says:

  15. Dianne Peña Says:

@Earn- Hi, i’ve never tried that pero according sa mga nag-comment dito sa blog post na to e maganda din siya so why not try it since it is made for a computer checker:)

  17. john Says:

bumili kc aq ng mongol pencil, one dozen, ung nakabox. pro madaling maputol ung lead, binili ko naman sa bookstore. same siya sa nasa picture na mongol cedarwood sa taas. yan bang mongol pencil picture sa taas ung sinasabi mong fake? i’ll take the NLE dis coming sunday, nov. 28.

  18. Dianne Peña Says:

  19. Ron Says:

Hi, to all… tanong ko kung pwede gamitin ang fabel castel sa local Nursing board exam….?
Baka ginagamit lang ito sa International Nsg. Board Exam? Baka hindi ito basahin sa computer dito sa pilipinas…. applicble ba itong gamitin. Thanks.

  20. Dianne Peña Says:

@Ron- Hi. I have used it and luckily, I PASSED :] Just make sure it is lead no. 2… Dont Worry! Good Luck and God Bless!

Hi. I’m trying out Faber Castell (dark green) 2B for computer and I hope this is it. 😀

  23. leeann Says:

Guys I think using mongol is so passe. Now that exams are checked by computer scanners, I opt to use FABER- CASTELL 9000 ( yes that’s the dark green 2B pencil ) because its made for computer. I’ve compared it with mongol and it does have darker and bigger lead, kaya kahit isharpen mo sya ng madals hindi mababali.

  24. officiallynurse Says:

Faber-Castell din ang gamit ko nung nag take ako ng exam. Meron silang exam pack, aside sa pencil, may kasama na syang eraser ska sharpener. I noticed during the exam na mabilis akong mag shade kasi dark na sya kaya hindi na paulit ulit ang pag shade so it’s not time consuming, remember time is of the essence during exams.

Believe me! I used it myself!

  25. sam Says:

FABER- CASTELL 9000 2B dark green ryt?…. sure ba guys na ok lang cya gamitin dito satin sa local board exam?… hmm magtake kasi ko ds comming july 2 & 3…sobrang kaba na … haist.. hope this pencil really works for NLE dito satin sa pinas.. thanks. hope to pass na this time… godbless…

  26. Dianne Peña Says:

@Sam- Hi! You could try using it during your final coaching pre-board exam since its going to be “board exam like” with the answer sheet. It will also be checked by a computer. You can compare your scores. Good Luck and God Bless!

  27. Carrell Johannes Boniao Batican Says:

nakabili ako ng faber castell 9000 2B kaso lang natakot ako kasi sabi ng lecturer namin na monggol 2 lang daw… kaya hindi ko siya nagamit 🙁

  28. sam Says:

    @dianne ok thanks sis.]

  29. Dianne Peña Says:

@Carell, you could read the comments below… there were some who used the same pencil and passed. I wasnt able to try that pencil because it was not yet out when i took the board exam. You could try using it during your pre-boards and see the difference in scores. Good Luck and God Bless! 🙂

  33. nald Says:

may eraser narin ang monggol. kakabili ko lang sa national bs. :))

  34. Dianne Peña Says:

@Nald- That is good to hear. I hope its a good eraser though. (Doesn’t leave any marks.)

  35. Dianne Peña Says:

@Lala- The most powerful tool that can help you in the board exam other than your preparation is your faith and confidence. God bless!

  36. have Says:

    Hi..HOW MUCH ANG FABER PENCIL?..

  37. Verlene Says:

I was going to use the #2 Faber-Castell pencil (the green one that you mentioned), but by a few weeks before the actual PNLE, its lead got broken twice after I sharpened it using the Igloo Maped sharpener, so I don’t know whether which one has a difference: sharpener or the Faber-Castell pencil. I ended up using #2 Mongol instead because its lead didn’t break.

  38. Dianne Peña Says:

Hi Verlene, sorry to hear that. I believe there are new pencils out in the market especially made for computer based checking. The pencil that blogged here has no indication for computer based checking. I just had the pleasure of experimenting way back. I think mongol has a new product for that purpose, if i am not mistaken. Anyways, it is not with the pencil, it is with your preparedness, will and faith. God Bless with the results!

  39. Dianne Peña Says:

Hi Have, sorry I dont exactly know the price but I think, it doesnt cost much, more or less 30php I think?

    Hi!

I’m a chemical engineering graduate and will take the board this November. Thank you for sharing this very informative blog!

I was searching the net if I can use my preferred pencil in the board exam. As I was searching, I saw an image of Stabilo pencil- my weapon of choice! And so, I quickly clicked the image and made it here to your blog. Hurray! And so, the computer that scans the answer sheet can really read shaded marks left by a Stabilo pencil. Phew, I’m just a little paranoid, huehuehue.

    Thank you so much!

  45. jcu Says:

gud day! I’m looking for the darker pencil like you’ve said for the exam. Hoping for I will pass and enter to the top 10 passers.I’m just tried the monggol it just not suitable for me. I found out it’s more time consuming, and it is difficult to use. thanks
